A domain and a server do different jobs
Your domain is the name customers use to find you. Hosting runs the website or application behind that name. Buying a domain does not automatically install a website: you still need an application, a hosting destination and DNS records connecting the two.
Before buying infrastructure, list what you need to run: a simple website, an online shop, an API or an application with a database. Check the software’s runtime and storage requirements before choosing a server.
Keep ownership and access clear
Register the domain in an account your business controls. Use an email address you can access, complete any registrar verification request and record the renewal date. Keep access to your domain account separate from temporary contractors’ access to your website.

Connect DNS carefully
An A record points a hostname to an IPv4 address; a CNAME points it to another hostname. Use the exact values supplied by your hosting service. Decide whether both the root domain and www should serve the website.
Before changing nameservers, copy existing records and identify any email-related records. Changing nameservers without recreating those records can interrupt email. Edit records at the DNS provider named by the domain’s authoritative nameservers.
Test before announcing the launch
Check the site on a phone and desktop, confirm HTTPS works, submit a test contact form and verify your main links. If you accept payments, test the complete payment and confirmation workflow before switching to live transactions.
Set up backups and monitoring, record who will respond to incidents, and confirm the recovery process. DNS caches can delay changes, so leave time between connecting the domain and starting your campaign.
