1.6 Health, backups, monitoring and renewals

Health

  • CPU, memory, disk, load, up for: how busy and full the server is. Keep the disk under about 80%.
  • Failed: …: a service on the server stopped. Log in and look at it.
  • Security updates waiting (run apt upgrade): log in and run sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -y.
  • A restart is needed to finish updates: restart at a quiet time.
  • Agent not reporting yet / No agent installed: use Get install command (or Reinstall the agent), run it on the server as root, and keep it private: it contains the server's key.

Backups

  • A whole-server backup every day; the first within a day.
  • Take a backup now before any big change.
  • Restore this backup: type the server's address to confirm. Everything on the server goes back to that copy.

Monitoring

  • Checks run every minute; Recent problems shows when something broke and how long it took to fix.
  • Settings: Ports to watch (up to 5; 22 is SSH), a web address that must answer (and words it must show), Slow after, Usage alerts (CPU, memory, disk), and an SMS number.

Controls

ButtonWhat happens
Start / Restart / StopStop takes websites and apps on it offline until you start it
New passwordA new root password; the old one stops working
ReinstallErases everything and installs a fresh system. You type the IP address to confirm

Renewals

  • Paid monthly from the Lynk wallet. Keep auto-renew on.
  • Missed renewal: runs 3 more days, then stops. Renew within 14 days to start it again. After that, it's deleted with all its data.
