2.1 Deploying: how a website gets onto a server
Deploying means putting a website or app on a server so people can reach it.
What happens when someone opens your domain
- DNS turns the domain into your server's IP address.
- The visitor's browser connects to your server on port 80 (http) or 443 (https).
- nginx, the web server, sees which domain was asked for.
- It sends files (a website), or passes the visit to an app running on the server.
- HTTPS (the padlock) protects everything sent. It needs a certificate, which is free.
Two ways to deploy in this module
| How | Good for | |
|---|---|---|
| Move a Lynk website to your server | One click in Lynk; Lynk installs it and keeps it updated | Websites built on Lynk |
| By hand, over SSH | You install, copy and run it yourself | Your own pages and apps |
