2.5 Domains and DNS records
DNS records you'll use
| Type | What it does | Example |
|---|---|---|
| A | Points a name at an IPv4 address | @ → 203.0.113.10 |
| AAAA | The same for an IPv6 address | |
| CNAME | Points a name at another name | www → kwesibuilds.com |
| MX | Where the domain's email goes. Don't touch it unless you're setting up email | |
| TXT | Text, like a verification code or an SPF record |
Host: @ means the domain itself (kwesibuilds.com). www means www.kwesibuilds.com. app means app.kwesibuilds.com.
Buy your own domain (Course 3 Module 2 has every step): Domains → Register a domain, search, Add to cart, Checkout, pay. Confirm your email if Domains asks.
Add a record
- Domains, then your domain (Manage).
- Under DNS records, click Add record.
- Choose the Type, type the Host and the Value, and save.
Check it's working (on your laptop): nslookup app.kwesibuilds.com should show your server's IP address. If it shows an old address or nothing, wait and try again.
Other things on a domain's page: Auto-renew (keep it on), Renew now (1 year), nameservers (leave them as they are unless you know why), and Unlock for transfer / Email me the transfer code for moving a domain away. To bring a domain to Lynk: Domains → Transfer a domain.
